STUDY MASTER’S AT KTU

Master+ is a unique module within chosen MSc programme in Engineering & Technology.

 

The Master+ model offers either to masterpiece in the chosen discipline by choosing the Field Expert track or to strengthen the interdisciplinary skills by choosing the Interdisciplinary Expert track emphasising managerial skills or a choice of a different competence to compliment the chosen discipline and achieve a competitive advantage in one’s career.

Students of these study programmes can choose between the path of Field Expert and Interdisciplinary Expert. Selection is made in the academic information system. Each path (competence) consists of three subjects (18 credits) allocated as follows: 1 year 1 semester (autumn) – first subject (6 credits), 1 year 2 semester (spring) – second subject (6 credits), 2 year 3 semester – third subject (6 credits). A student, who chooses a path of the Field Expert, deepens knowledge and strengthens skills in the main field of studies. The one, who chooses a path of the Interdisciplinary Expert, acquires knowledge and skills in a different area or field of studies. Competence provides a choice of alternative additional subjects.

 

Field Expert (profound knowledge and skills in the area, required for solution of scientific research tasks);

 

Interdisciplinary Expert:
1. Interdisciplinary (fields of different knowledge and skills are combined for solution of specific tasks);
2. Management (industry/business applied profile, knowledge and skills required by the manager).

 

Acquisition of the competence is certified by the issue of KTU certificate and entry in the appendix to the Master’s diploma. In addition, students can acquire an international certificate (details are provided next to each competence).

 

Competences are implemented by KTU lecturers – experts in their area – and high level business and public sector organisations; their employees deliver lectures, submit topics for the student’s theses, placement-oriented tasks for the projects, etc.

MA+ COMPETENCES

Growing economic, ecological needs of humanity increasingly motivate the modernization of production processes, to development and integration of modern control technologies in production processes, control systems for production plants. In this field a special role plays professionals of control systems. Graduates who acquired competency of control technology have a huge advantage in Lithuanian and foreign labor markets. Acquired competences could be applied in the analysis of the existing production control technologies and systems, in assessment of the needs of modernization, in integration of new modern systems, searching for traditional and non-traditional production modernization solutions and ensuring a safe and environmentally friendly production.

It is very important for companies to derive value from this data and extract insights about client behaviour, resource utilisation, productivity etc. Labour market is lacking specialists who could analyse data and draw valuable conclusions which are required for successful business future. Therefore graduates with data analysis skills are in high demand. These specialists are able to develop analytical models of various business systems. By applying mathematical and statistical methods using modern analytical tools, analysts extract meaningful and useful information, which can support business decisions and allow to understand, improve, control, optimise, forecast complex business systems and processes.

Construction sector’s importance to the state economy and the prosperity of the society, the influence to the sustainable urban and regional development are obvious. Today’s construction and real estate businesses need professionals with strategic and business management competencies, technical skills of buildings and infrastructure construction project management, leadership and cooperation talents. The graduates with the acquired Construction Project Management competencies have expertise in construction project management features, construction contracts and construction logistics, construction pricing and quality management; they are able to prepare the plan for construction project development and control, have abilities to apply special computer software for project management issues at different construction project management stages. Climate change and the reduction of CO2 emission induced major changes in energy systems. Diversification of power energy sources, occurrence of energy markets, challenges of energy security, and development of renewable power sources as a basic generation caused strategic changes in the technical structures of energy systems and, also, in their control principles and safe and reliable energy supply.
The competence “Power System Control” is dedicated to developing skills in controlling these rapidly changing processes, teaching of making smart and optimal decisions for the development of technical and control structures of power systems and reliable energy supply, and properly applying the possibilities offered by energy markets based on technical and economic knowledge, as well as practice.

Nanotechnology engineering covers the investigation of phenomena and alteration of material properties at atomic, molecular or macromolecular level, where their properties can have a substantial difference when compared to macroscale. It is development, evaluation, fabrication and application of structures, devices and systems, all whilst controlling their nanoscale shape and dimensions. Therefore, it is possible to develop materials with unique properties by manipulating the structure and composition at the atomic level, thus solving many global problems. The progress of many areas of science and technology is directly dependent on further application of nanotechnology and nanomaterials. Nanomaterials can be applied in a wide variety of areas, e.g. health and medicine, food and transportation, information and communication technology, energy and environmental research as well as everyday life (nanoparticle dyes; fuel cells; displays; catalytic materials, carbon nanofiber composites for mechanical applications, lubricants, magnetic materials, medical implants, nanomembranes for water purification, etc.)

Today, business success is strongly associated with the success of projects. Moreover, PMI announces that Project management is a critical competence that has a positive influence on organization results and society and the need of project managers will increase in three times until 2020. The professional project manager becomes a direct way to the business success. Every day he deals with changes and complexity in dynamic environments.
Graduates that acquire Project Management competence have double value: they supplement professional competencies with important project managing competences. There are open career opportunities for such professionals not only in Lithuania, but also in foreign countries’ business and public sector companies. Project managers assess the need of a project and the relation with the organization strategy, initiate and plan project activities, results, schedules and budget, form project team and organise project activities, ensure project supply, assess the project risks and chooses right response strategies, manage project and ensure the success of the project to all interested parties. Moreover, graduates who have project management competencies can work as independent project evaluators, experts or consultants.
The study process of Project Manager Competence is based on blended learning approach when online learning tools and face to face meetings are combined. Experienced project managers – practitioners provide guest lectures.

Student gains the knowledge of new products creation processes, planes transformation by volumetric forms of product and composition elements and the abilities to design the new products by fashion and market requirements.

The best business idea should be supported by effective business processes. During studies of “Business process and supply chain management“ you will gain knowledge and develop practical skills how to create, manage and improve production systems and supply chains of organizations. You will explore how organizations align their production systems with strategy; the characteristics of different types of production systems and supply chains. You will learn and apply insights of Lean, TQM, Sic sigma, TOC and Reengineering for enhancement of operational excellence. Following trends of data science, you will gain experience how analytical methods may be used for improvement of quality, delivery, cost effectiveness and flexibility of organizations.
The teachers of “Business process and supply chain management” apply experience-based teaching methods combining lectures of representatives of business companies, simulations and full case analysis methods allowing students to experience the problems of organizations and engage in search for solutions. The Urban Management competence will include both policy/management and engineering (information, waste, transport, energy, water, other resources) elements of smart and sustainable urban development.
