Design for Circular Economy

The aim of the competence is to develop students ability (knowledge and skills) to design products, services and systems based on circular economy model.

Design is an integral part of the Circular Economy (CE). The concept of CE relates to long-life products and recovered resources. In CE, waste is no longer an option. Therefore, it cannot operate without product design, which contrasts starkly to those for the linear economy throw-away products. Once the product specifications are made, only minor changes are possible, i.e., it is essential to integrate the CE approach at an early stage of the design process.

Circular Design (Design for circular economy) takes into consideration People, Planet, and Profit. It is embedded as a core strategy for businesses and consumers (transformation of processes and the consumer culture). The vehicle for changes is ‘Redesign’ and occurs around the main four elements: 1. Circular Design Strategies; 2. New Business Models (based on Service design; Product-Service system design); 3. Cross-disciplinary Intelligence; 4. System Conditions. The three dimensions of People, Planet, Profit are both driven by circular design and influence the redesign processes in the CE.

One of the main challenges for CE development is Mental shift. Circular Design includes the design of products or services and also design thinking – a way of thinking rooted in the design process. It helps to transform linear thinking (from linear to circular), impact the process of product/service development in different industries, enable interdisciplinary collaboration, and trigger the design of human and planet-centered solutions for unpredicted challenges.

Study subjects

Circular Design Strategies (W240M010)
Provides knowledge on circular design strategies, develop the ability to increase product integrity, create high added value physical and emotional durability products. Practical seminars foreseen aimed to experience each of the strategy by designing mini design challenges.
Circular Design Project (W240M001)
Students acquire comprehensive understanding on circular design, its methods and tools. Develop circular design skills, circular mindset and systems thinking. Develop the ability to design products, services and systems, based on the circular economy model and the integration of three dimensions: People, Planet, and Profit. The course addresses a design challenge. The design process is underpinned by design thinking methodology.
Sustainable Management of Natural Resources (T270M006)
The course provides knowledge needed to understand the interdependence between natural resources (state and limits in availability) and human activities (economic growth, technologies used, social issues). The basics of anthropogenic metabolism, European Union strategic initiatives development (Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe, The Raw Materials Initiative, An EU Action Plan for the Circular Economic, and other), indicators and methodologies to analyse resource use are taught. Competences to assess and plan the use of natural resources are developed: students will be able to perform material flow analysis at enterprise or regional level with a help of software STAN.
