Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is as old as the human civilization itself. Yet, paradoxically – this field of science constantly reinvents itself; it changes, sets new trends and adapts to a contemporary world’s needs.

Probably the greatest challenge for today’s engineers is how to make the most effective use of digital tools (buildings’ information modelling, 3D printing and others) that enable the creation of the most complex structures quickly and economically, meeting the needs of society and individuals.

While studying at KTU, you will get acquainted with the main processes of design, construction, installation, and operation of buildings. This is general but essential knowledge that will allow you to choose the desired specialisation in later years of study and focus more on the chosen topic: structures, technologies or building engineering systems.

BSc in Civil Engineering at KTU offers a broad spectrum of courses to prepare graduates for the dynamic environment of the construction business.

  • Hands-on experience through practical tasks
  • Working with contemporary software packages, such as Building Information Modelling software (BIM), Revit, Scia Engineering, Tekla, DDS-CAD, Bentley, which enable the construction process to move to 5D or even 7D dimensions
  • Out of classroom activities and field trips to construction offices, factories, and construction sites

While studying at KTU Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, together with students of the architecture program, you will participate in the Joint Project module, during which you will work in teams, collaborate with professionals and gain practical experience in civil engineering. More about the Joint Project in this video. You can view student projects in the digital twin of Kaunas city.

The admission for 2024 autumn intake will not be conducted for this study programme.

Values

Why @KTU?

Technology-driven studies

During your studies, you will meet the core of construction technologies: construction structures and materials, organization, and building engineering systems (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water supply, renewable resources). There will be plenty of practical tasks, whether you choose to contribute to the design of structures or ventilation systems or organize construction processes.

Why @KTU?

Creativity through logic

A civil engineer is faced with different complications. In order to find the best-suited solutions he has to use analytical and creative skills. It is necessary to reconcile design, construction management situations, types of selected materials for a set price – thus, logical, analytical, and creative thinking will be required.

Why @KTU?

Skyscraping possibilities

This program will prepare you for today’s demanding construction project market. Many students start to work during their studies or after the internship, others start shortly after their graduation. Employment rates are among the highest, and work is particularly well paid. Also, there are many Lithuanian offices operating building design services – our civil engineers, who design for clients from many countries of the world, successfully integrate into the activities of these companies.

Forefront equipment

While studying you will work with modern Building Information Modeling software (BIM), which enables you to blend all of the construction process stages: design, manufacture, construction, and operation. With the use of  Revit, Scia Engineering, Tekla, DDS-CAD,  Bentley, and many other software packages, you will enable the construction process to move to 5D or even 7D dimensions.

See processes in-action

There will be plenty of activities outside of the classroom, you will be taken to construction offices, factories, and buildings already built or under construction. You will have the opportunity to see how construction work or actual production is handled. Every year there are trips organized to various seminars, conferences, competitions, where students can demonstrate their knowledge and, of course, have a good time.

Product and service development

Are you interested in creating real products and services while studying? It is now possible to test yourself by getting involved in a product development project (PDP). During the project, you will work in teams, collaborating with KTU researchers and social partners. While solving current, relevant problems you will improve your teamwork, project management, and problem-solving skills, deepen professional knowledge and expand your career opportunities.

Career

What will you gain?

  • You will be able to prepare construction proposals for various structures and buildings using knowledge of building structures, engineering systems, production of construction products.
  • You will offer innovative solutions for nonstandard issues of today’s constructive engineering market, ensure all quality aspects are met and evaluate technical measures and their management methods.
  • You will have a broad knowledge of social, scientific, and ethnic matters so you can address important issues.
  • Finally, you will be able to communicate information, ideas, problems, and solutions with other experts.

You may become

These specialists ensure that a construction process is being carried out according to the plan and the design project. They take care of the development from the beginning to the very end and coordinate manufacturing ensuring quality standards are met.

This person performs a core function when designing a building – according to the customer’s expectations, he creates a computer model of the building and prepares drawings for the construction phase of the building. This is a role that can involve different parts of a building, a single building, or even a complex.

These construction engineers manage and coordinate the implementation of a building project solution, install engineering systems on the construction site, take care of the supply of materials and equipment, as well as work safety.

These experts ensure the right microclimate of the building – heating, air conditioning, ventilation. They can also design plumbing systems. He also the necessary decisions to make the building energy class efficient and effective.

During studies the person learns not only a certain "craft", but also develops an ability to communicate with people, which is very useful in the professional activities. Studies provide the ground and everything else depends on personal features – diligence, persistence, willingness to acquire knowledge, to move forward, and, of course, a little bit of luck.

In my opinion, Bachelor degree studies of Civil Engineering at KTU are really promising and useful. As soon as I defended by Bachelor degree thesis at the qualification commission, I received congratulations, as well as an offer to work at design company AB “Pramprojektas" from one commission member. During studies I deepened my knowledge in design of structures for construction objects, I learned to work in team and make individual decisions, acquired fundamental knowledge and skills, which I later improved at the design company. It was interesting to study, knowing that I will be able to apply the acquired knowledge preparing projects for various buildings and constructions. It is a pleasure to see the objects designed by me travelling through Lithuania. After graduation I entered Master degree studies. During Master degree studies and my work at the company I got acquainted with the specifics of design, learned to use the latest design programmes. I had a great opportunity to work and at the same time study at the second cycle studies. Soon after graduation I was appointed the company's head of design department. When I gained sufficient experience in the area of design, I established my own company, which is still successfully working in Lithuanian market. I welcome the students of civil engineering for a professional placement at my company and offer employment to the most talented ones. However, I would like to wish the students of engineering not to be naive and expect that when they receive a diploma, their head will be filled with the information required for work. That is not so... You have to have a constant willingness to improve, sometimes you have sleepless nights, because that is how you acquire practical practice and become a specialist of your area.
