Sustainable Management and Production

Today, the only way for organisations to stay up to date-is to be able to operate sustainably. It is therefore crucial that not only the outcomes of production but also its management and processes are aligned with the principles of sustainable development. This requires experts in sustainable management and production, and excellent leaders that can help organizations improve on a global scale.

KTU master’s studies in Sustainable Management and Production merge three different fields: environmental engineering, manufacturing engineering, and business. It is a combination of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills with a solid basis in engineering science, that is necessary for future leaders and innovators.

Studying at KTU, you will gain an understanding of applied engineering and holistic life cycle approach, and acquire a unique ability to systematically assess the consequences of decisions in terms of environmental, economic, and technological aspects. Our students are educated on complex interactions and interdependencies between economic decisions, technological solutions, and innovations, they gain an understanding of the relationships among market forces, policies, and the environment.

This course is developed with people who are already working in mind – you will be able to combine distance and classroom activities. In our study process, we encourage learning through independent work and expanding theoretical knowledge, teamwork and practical competencies at the evening lectures, which can be also joined remotely. Some classes will take place on Saturdays – classroom lectures, groups, and practical seminars. You will also be able to attend consultations at the Institute of Environmental Engineering.

Our graduates are equipped with strong interlinked competencies in engineering and management. After graduation, you will contribute to the design, production, and management activities of the value chain considering the limits of natural resources, following sustainability procedures, and at the same time managing business and production risks to guarantee competitiveness. You will be able to use your knowledge in international or local organisations, demonstrating leadership in sustainable development.

  • For educating preventive environmental management specialists the study programme received international environmental Energy Globe
  • Recognized as the best engineering study program in Europe for the education of sustainable industrial development specialists, awarded with QUESTE-SI quality assurance label
  • Advanced study methods used: real industry environmental problems are solved in cooperation with the practitioners
  • An effective combination of mandatory and elective courses allows for designing an individual study plan
  • Research-based studies: Sustainable Management and Production is the only program coordinated by a research institute (KTU Institute of Environmental Engineering)

Studying at Institute of Environmental Engineering gave me a broad engineering mindset, which is very useful not only at work but also in life. The theory, based on practical examples, is taught by professionals in their field, who have contributed significantly to Lithuanian legislation, sustainability, the modern environmental concept we have today and the practice that is now being followed in business, manufacturing and public administration.

During my studies, I have not only acquired a wealth of knowledge in environmental engineering, but I have also learnt how to systematically assess a situation, make quick decisions and solve problems. My studies at Institute of Environmental Engineering also had a direct impact on my career. The analysis of various situations and the knowledge of legislation related to environmental protection gave me the opportunity to work in the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania and to participate in the development of the Lithuanian policy on waste prevention, management and treatment.

Graduates of this programme have a well-developed systematic-logical thinking, much practical and latest theoretical knowledge of technologies used in the modern industry and their environmental impact. The ability of such specialists to see the situation from various angles – technological, economic, environmental and social – is fascinating and inspires trust in their professional skills. I think these specialists are welcome not only in the industry, but also in the business and public institutions.

Her insights about master studies Sustainable Management and Production:
I have worked with various waste management related projects in India, while I had an urge to learn more about waste management and its techniques worldwide. And my interest to pursue higher education abroad boosted me to look for a suitable course. I stumbled upon KTU website, and programme Sustainable Management and Production triggered my interest, as it focus on cleaner production and sustainable management concepts. In developing countries, these concepts are still restricted only with books never been used or implemented practically. To learn how these concepts work on real case scenario and how it is applied worldwide especially in Europe. This intrigued me to take upon this programme. Also, this programme covered assessment subjects like environmental impact assessment, life cycle assessment, etc. Not only the course module, University's well-established partner universities, scholarship opportunities for non-EU students altogether made to choose this programme.
I always believe that students'-teachers' rapport is very much important to indulge and enjoy the studies. First of all, I am glad to mention that the teachers who taught me were extremely friendly, helpful and motivating throughout my studies.
Secondly, the classes and content of course were interesting which are not just restricted with books rather focused on current and real time challenges, issues in Europe and Lithuania. Almost all the modules, had covered wide range of new topics which I was not exposed to earlier.
Thirdly, I was pretty excited when I was motivated to apply for exchange programme to study at one of the partner universities for a semester. I received various suggestions and feedbacks from programme coordinator and other teachers. Semester abroad was completely a different experience and quite a learning phase as an exchange student.
Moreover, the examination patterns are quite interesting, as it is not just limited with written exams. Having combination of different exams like oral defence and PowerPoint presentation, writing a detailed essay on a topic, written exams seems to be quite interesting, learning and less stressful than usual pattern of exam.
I cannot just restrict with one module and say it is most memorable or useful to me. Rather, all the modules were quite interesting and different in their own aspects. However, I enjoyed Sustainable Consumption and Production, Environment Impact Assessment Modules, Environmental Management very much as it was much engaging and trying to evaluate and assess an object, make a detailed report on our assessment. While Chemicals Risk Management, Ecosystem Modelling piqued my interest to get into research.
Overall, I believed, this programme will take me one step ahead in my career.
