Communication Studies and Information Management Technologies

This study programme combines communication and technological sciences and prepares communication specialists who are able and keen to work in multicultural environment in business, government or public sector. Study curriculum is built upon project-based activities and real issues’ solving. Practitioners and lecturers from abroad often participate in the study process. An important part of this programme is technologies, “human touch in high tech environment”, which enable students of social studies to analyse, create, and manage content. It is the first Bachelor’s programme in Lithuania which lasts 3 years and is implemented together with the University of Twente (Netherlands). Students have a possibility to study in the University of Twente for one semester.

Studies connecting social and technological sciences

Graduates will have achieved skills of communication and analysis, be able to create effective communicative content, be knowledgeable of the newest information and communication technology (ICT), which they creatively apply during the processes of communication as well as for personal and work purposes.

This study programme is unique due to much of the focus being given to the technological tools of communication: systems of content management, website management, communication analysis, quantitative and qualitative IT tools, tools of social media data management, visual (photography, illustration, video) and textual interfaces, dynamics, online publication of information (textual and visual) based on the latest UX (user experience) research, and for the purposes of developing practical skills and entrepreneurship.

The study programme largely relies on a project-based education process, during which students develop the idea from a concept to a product.

Internationality and study exchange opportunities

As a member of the ECIU (European Consortium of Innovative Universities), KTU has a study agreement for the Twin Programme in Communication Science. This programme opens up a possibility to study for a semester in one of the most innovative universities of Europe: University of Twente in the Netherlands. During the fifth semester students may choose to study subjects related to communication in the University of Twente. A certificate is provided upon completion of these international studies.

Some of the study subjects include: Going Viral, Damage Control, Facilitating Technological Innovations, The Privacy Paradox. There is also a possibility to stay in KTU and design an individual study plan.

The list of lecturers of the study programme includes not only Lithuanians, but also many teachers from abroad, and the subjects of the programme may be chosen by international students, therefore during the second semester they must study English of the C1 level (in cases of a student already being at a C1 level at the time of admission, they may choose to study a second foreign language, including French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and others). Moreover, half of the modules of this study programme are being taught in English.

Modules are taught by KTU lecturers and communication experts, together with international lecturers (University of Twente, University of Bologna, University of Turin) and practitioners (Barclays, Lithuanian Public Relations Specialists’ Union, managers of organisations and departments of public relations, communication or mediation, Toastmasters, actors of the National Kaunas drama theatre, Motionlab, and others).
Studies provide the opportunity to develop practical and international skills of communication.

Skills

From an idea to a product

Graduates will have the opportunity to apply the acquired skills and knowledge of communication in practice by working on real interdisciplinary projects relevant to the society and market.

Starting the second semester and until the fourth semester, every semester includes a Product Development Project, during which students apply their knowledge practically and work with various organisations of business and public sector, and work in teams to develop their goals from an idea to a product.

The innovator of science and business “MoVe-In: From an idea to product’s introduction to the market” is adapted to the study process. During the Product Development Project students gain the competences of both their chosen field and entrepreneurship, create innovative products, learn to take initiative and react to the demands of the market and society. Science and business partners actively engage in the process of the development of products for business, public sector and science.

High-on-demand and promising speciality, high salaries in the market

According to the statistical data of the last few years, the salary of a communication and ICT specialist remains as one of the highest in Lithuania. World Bank states that now and in the future a successful employee will have cognitive skills (thinking, social and communicational) and will be able to apply information and communication technologies in their career.

Graduates of Communication studies in KTU, having a unique set of communication, technological and language skills, will be fully prepared to work in areas such as internal communication departments of an organisation, application of new media and information tools, and creation of information management products.

Graduates will be able to take the position of a risk and crisis communication and mediator specialist, work in public relations agencies, media planning and advertisement agencies, creative industry, state-owned companies.

Analysis, design and development of websites combining artistry and creativity with software and scenario language, as well as interface with operational environment;
Design and development of digital animation, photographs, games, audio and video clips, Internet applications using multimedia software, tools and measures, interactive graphics and programming languages;
Design, development and integration of computer code with such specialised inputs as photographs, audio files and scenario language for development, supervision and maintenance of websites;
Maintenance of communication with network specialists regarding safety and website hosting for control and insurance of safety of the Internet and web server, distribution of space, user access, continuous operation, network’s backup copy and recovery plan.
