Mariandree Espinoza Aragon from Guatemala came to Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) with a clear dream – to study abroad and become a scientist.
Growing up in a country known for its colourful landscapes, rivers and lakes, as well as its rich Mayan heritage, she learned early to appreciate both diversity and ambition. “Guatemala is a country in Central America known for its beautiful, colourful landscapes, rivers and lakes,” she says, adding that the country is also home to major Mayan landmarks such as Tikal and La Danta.
Mariandree has had the opportunity to study abroad since childhood, spending time in India, Guatemala and Oman. Outside her academic life, she has also built a strong sporting background: she did gymnastics and holds a black belt in Taekwondo. That discipline and determination later became part of her study journey as well.
She chose Chemical Technology and Engineering because she always wanted to become a scientist. “Throughout my school years, I developed my interest in chemistry, physics and mathematics, which are the basis of chemical engineering,” she says. The programme appealed to her because of its wide scope, from textiles and paper to petroleum products. “I found it so fascinating,” Mariandree says.
KTU became her choice after she started searching for bachelor’s opportunities before finishing high school. She found the University online and was especially drawn to the fact that chemical engineering could be studied in English. “When I saw the syllabus of the courses, I got interested and submitted my application,” she says. “It was also one of the universities that allowed me to study chemical engineering in English.”
For Mariandree, coming to Lithuania was both exciting and challenging. She remembers being impressed by the campus, which she says feels similar to campuses in America. Over the years, she has grown more comfortable with Kaunas and appreciates how much the city has changed. “It’s a very nice city where you can move easily and safely,” she says.
